He finished his education with an LL.M from the University of Michigan, where he fell in love with Elizabeth Durfee, a fellow law student. Their courtship was interrupted by the Second World War. Paul enlisted in the Navy, served in the Pacific in the Office of Naval Intelligence, and was discharged as a Lieutenant in 1946. In that year, Paul and Elizabeth married, and Paul began his career at the University of Kentucky law school, teaching his near-contemporaries who flocked to the educational opportunities provided by the GI Bill. Professor Oberst was committed from childhood to the American ideals of equality and freedom.
He was widely known for his activities promoting civil rights for all, not always to popular acclaim. In 1948 he was a party to the Federal lawsuit against Kentucky's Day Law, which prohibited racial integration in colleges and universities, and subsequently taught law to John Hatch, the University's first African student, behalf the suit been filed. Howard Hardin, who was well-known in Kentucky agricultural circles, died of complications from cancer Wednesday at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.
He was Mr. 83 and Hardin, lived a in County tobacco and dairy farmer, had been a director Dairymen Inc. and the KYANA Division of Dairymen Inc. He also had been a director of Kentucky Production Credit Association in Shelbyville, Central Dairy Council and Spencer County Southern States Cooperative. He was a former Mason County assistant agricultural extension agent.
He also was a Spencer County magistrate for about 20 years, beginning in 1959, and had served on the Kentucky Board of Health. Professor Oberst was active in the governance of the University of Kentucky and the promotion of its place as a nationally ranked institution. He served on the Athletic Board and the Faculty Senate, and was instrumental in securing legislation that places two elected faculty members on the Board of Trustees- a measure that makes UK a national Leader in progressive governance. Professor Oberst was elected to three terms as a faculty trustee. Professor Oberst interrupted his Kentucky career with visiting professorships at the Universities of Michigan and Chicago, New York University, Southern Methodist, and Duke. He spent two summers at Princeton, teaching in a program (OPAL) preparing students from around the world for law studies in America.
In his retirement, Paul Oberst continued to gather the laurels that his forward-looking spirit had earned long ago. He was recently named to the UK Law School Alumni Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Civil Rights agriculturalist Hardin dies Kappa graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he received a bachelor's degree in agriculture. He was a pharmacist mate second class in the Navy during World War II. He had been a member of Alpha Zeta national honorary agriculture fraternity and a deacon at Little Mount Baptist Church in Spencer County. Survivors include his wife, Veta Hochstrasser Hardin; a son, Howard Anthony Hardin of Taylorsville; a daughter, Bernadette Gaar Hardin of Taylorsville; a sister; and a grandson.

Professor Paul Oberst died peacefully in Lexington on February 27, with his wife and two of his sons at side. Professor Oberst is survived by his wife Elizabeth; his five children and their families; and countless former students. The children all believe they learned something from the Professor, the students will have to speak for themselves. The family suggests that contributions would be welcomed by the Paul Oberst Scholarship fund at the UK Law School.

Visitation 10 a.m. Monday. Ky. could lose bid for uranium facility By Malia Rulon ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON Two former nuclear processing plants in Ohio and Kentucky are being pitted against each other as the U.S. Department of Energy decides where to build a facility to process spent uranium.
Instead of choosing a contractor this week to build two facilities at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio, and the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Paducah the department asked bidders how much it will cost to build one plant at each site. In a letter sent to the bidders late Thursday, Don R. Sloan, chairman of the Energy Department's Source Evaluation Board, said the department would use this information "in making a decision on the number and location of plants." That has riled lawmakers from both states who have repeatedly reminded the Energy Department that a 1998 law specifies the construction of two plants, not one. The law specifies that the two facilities begin by Jan. 31, 2004.
The law does not prevent the Energy Department from taking new bids that could lead to only one plant being built, said Joe Davis, a department spokesman in Washington. The conversion facilities are expected to bring several hundred long-term jobs along with as many as 800 construction jobs to each site. During the Cold War, the plants produced weapons-grade enriched uranium for defense projects. The new facilities would convert this stockpile of depleted uranium, a dangerous and toxic byproduct, to a more stable form for storage, use or disposal. Vall, Lexington, KY and Susan K.
